The Samsung Lions have just been hit with a major blow.
Foreign pitcher Albert Suarez (33) will be sidelined for a month with a torn left calf muscle.
Suarez injured his left calf in the second inning of a 0-0 home game against the LG Twins in the 2023 Baseball World Series at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on June 6 while running to cover first base when Kim Hyun-soo hit a single to right field.
He limped out and was replaced by right-handed pitcher Lee Seung-hyun, and was taken to a nearby hospital for further examination.
"A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed that his left gastrocnemius (calf muscle) was damaged by about 12 centimeters," a Samsung representative said, "and he will need to devote about four weeks to recovery."
A blow, literally. Suarez is a difficult starter to replace.
In 18 games this season, he's 4-7 with a 3.94 ERA.
He was particularly strong in the month of July, starting three games and not allowing a run in 19 innings.
Last-place Samsung 토토 raised its hopes of breaking out of the cellar with Suarez, going 8-5, 1-0, and posting a .615 winning percentage in July.
However, Suarez's departure will make it difficult for the team to manage the mound for the time being. On the day, Samsung fell to LG 4-7 in a heavy atmosphere.
